Background: Energy healing practices are increasingly being integrated into traditional healthcare. Central to energy healing modalities is the concept of harnessing the invisible energy field that surrounds the body, also referred to as the Aura(1)(2), Chi, or Prana (3). All living beings have this energy field (referred to here as Prana Field), which is said to aid the body’s natural healing mechanisms (4).  A significant challenge is the inability to measure this invisible energy field with contemporary scientific instruments. Pranic Healing is a rapidly growing discipline of energy healing where the healer assesses the Prana Field using their hands, a technique known as Manual Hand Scanning, or ‘Scanning’(7). The subjectivity of the healer’s individual perception of the energy may be a limitation. Hence, the Quantum Physics Prana Studies (QPPS) Research Group explored the accuracy and consistency of measuring the Prana Field(8) through Scanning. The group also evaluated if the Prana Field can be measured with a dowsing rod, which has been used to detect energy fields, such as under-ground water. However, their use to detect and measure the Prana Field has not been thus far documented.

Objectives: The primary objective was to find a method that consistently measured the Prana Field. The two methods investigated were Scanning and dowsing rod.

Outcomes: The primary outcome was to validate Scanning and dowsing rods as valid and reliable tools to measure the Prana Field.

Methods: Over a six-month period, four teams in different locations measured Prana Field of similar sized potted plants. The investigator (the Scanner), walked slowly towards the plant until a change in the sensation of energy field was detected with their open palm. The distance (cm) between the plant and the Scanner’s palm was measured.

Next, a  dowsing rod was mounted on a cart that was slowly pulled toward the plant until there was movement of the rod. Distance (cm) between the plant and the dowsing rod was measured.

For both parts, data was collected as twenty measurements per researcher in each of the five-member teams. Researchers acted in experimental set-up rotation.

Results:  The overall mean distance of the plants’ Prana Field with Scanning was 578.29 cm (SE +29.08). The error between the groups was 1.96%. The overall mean distance of the energy detected by the dowsing rod was 214.53 cm (SE+4,21). The error between the groups was 5.03%.

Discussion: Measurements of the energy field were consistently larger with the Scanning technique than with the dowsing rod, suggesting that Scanning may be more sensitive to detecting the Prana Field or that the dowsing rod may be measuring a different field. This study shows that Scanning can be a simple and effective tool to measure the Prana Field. Given the simplicity of the Scanning technique, it can be utilized to measure changes quickly and easily in the Prana Field that occur in response to medical treatment, thus allowing for better integration of energy healing with conventional interventions.
